How to Cope with Anxiety in Motherhood Without Drinking Over It

If you’re the mom who everyone relies on, the one who keeps the schedules running, solves the problems, remembers all the details, and somehow holds everything together, this conversation is for you.

Maybe you’ve spent years believing that if you just worked harder, stayed organized, or pushed through the overwhelm, you’d finally feel calm.

Maybe you’ve poured a glass of wine at the end of the day because it was the only thing that seemed to quiet your racing mind and give you a break from the pressure.

Maybe you’ve found yourself wondering why you feel so anxious, frustrated, or emotionally exhausted when, on paper, your life looks pretty good.

“Why can’t I just slow down?”

“Why do I feel like I’m failing when I’m doing everything I can?”

In this episode, I’m talking with Kate Kripke, a maternal mental health expert, therapist, coach, and host of the Motherhood Uncut podcast, about the invisible emotional load so many women carry—and why anxiety, guilt, perfectionism, and overwhelm often drive us toward coping strategies that ultimately make us feel worse.

We dive into the connection between motherhood anxiety, emotional discomfort, people-pleasing, perfectionism, and drinking, and talk about what it actually looks like to stay present with hard feelings instead of escaping them.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re failing as a mom, worried you’re not doing enough, or reached for wine because you needed relief from the pressure, this conversation will help you understand what’s really happening underneath the surface.

The Question So Many Women Are Asking

How do I handle anxiety, overwhelm, guilt, and emotional discomfort in motherhood without using alcohol to escape it?

This Episode Is For You If…

✅ You constantly feel like you’re behind, no matter how much you accomplish.

✅ You use wine to shut off your racing thoughts at the end of the day.

✅ You look calm and capable on the outside but feel like you’re falling apart inside.

✅ You tell yourself, “I should be grateful—why am I struggling so much?”

✅ You’ve ever thought, “I love my kids, but sometimes motherhood feels impossible.”

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

❇️ Why anxiety in motherhood often shows up as stress, overwhelm, busyness, perfectionism, and insomnia.

❇️ The difference between strategic intelligence (fixing, doing, achieving) and relational intelligence (feeling, connecting, and staying present).

❇️ Why so many women use alcohol, overworking, people-pleasing, or staying busy to avoid emotional discomfort.

❇️ How your nervous system responds when you believe uncomfortable emotions are dangerous.

❇️ A simple framework for slowing down, regulating your nervous system, and responding more intentionally.

❇️ Why connection—not control—is often the thing that helps anxiety settle.

❇️ How self-compassion can help you move through guilt, frustration, disappointment, and fear without numbing them.

    The Shifts That Change Everything

🌺 From believing uncomfortable feelings mean something is wrong → to understanding that emotions are information, not instructions.

🌺 From trying to control everyone around you so you can feel better → to learning how to stay connected to yourself first.

🌺 From escaping anxiety through wine, overworking, or perfectionism → to building the capacity to sit with discomfort and trust that you’re okay.

🌺 From asking, “How do I make this feeling go away?” → to asking, “What does this moment need from me?”

🌺 From self-criticism and shame → to self-compassion and nervous system safety.

What I Want You to Remember

Motherhood was never meant to be something you power through without support.

The anxiety, guilt, frustration, fear, disappointment, and overwhelm you feel don’t mean you’re failing. They don’t mean you’re broken. And they definitely don’t mean you need to drink your way through them.

One of the most powerful ideas from this conversation is that emotional discomfort isn’t the problem. The problem is how often we’ve been taught to avoid it.

When you learn how to stay connected to yourself—even in the middle of hard moments—you create the possibility for deeper connection with your children, your partner, and yourself.

    And that changes everything.

How To Stop Performing And Start Taking Better Care Of Yourself

Motherhood will always come with moments of anxiety, frustration, disappointment, uncertainty, and overwhelm.

The goal isn’t to eliminate those feelings or never struggle again.

The invitation is to stop treating those feelings like a problem that needs to be fixed.

As Kate shared, emotional discomfort isn’t dangerous. It’s part of being human. And when you learn to stay connected to yourself instead of immediately reaching for a way to escape, numb, control, or push through it, something powerful begins to change.

You create space to respond instead of react.
You learn to meet yourself with more compassion.
And you start trusting that you can handle hard moments without abandoning yourself in the process.

So if you’re carrying the invisible weight of trying to hold everything together, let this be your reminder:

☀️ You don’t have to be a perfect mom to be a good one.
☀️ You don’t have to have all the answers.
☀️ And you don’t have to drink over your anxiety, guilt, or overwhelm to get through motherhood.

There is another way—and it starts with connection.
