Business Travel Without Alcohol (When Drinking Feels Like Part of the Job)
If you’ve ever wondered how to handle business travel without alcohol, you’re not alone.
For so many working women, drinking is woven into every part of work travel:
✳️ Airport bars while waiting for flights
✳️ Wine at client dinners
✳️ Cocktails at networking events
✳️ Drinks in the hotel room to unwind
It can feel like alcohol isn’t just available—it’s expected.
So the idea of navigating work trips, conferences, and client dinners without drinking can feel overwhelming, awkward, and honestly… a little impossible.
In this episode, I’m talking with Deneen and Emily—two women from my Sobriety Starter Kit® community—about how they went from relying on alcohol during business travel to confidently navigating it alcohol-free.
We’re sharing real-life strategies for:
➡️ Sober business travel
➡️ Client dinners without drinking
➡️ Hotel nights without alcohol
➡️ And how to stop feeling like you need a drink to fit in

Practical Strategies for Sober Business Travel
These are the exact tools you can use when you’re in the moment—at the airport, at dinner, or back in your hotel room.
✈️ How to Handle Airports Without Drinking
If the airport bar used to be your routine, this is one of the biggest shifts.
Instead:
- Walk the terminal or get your steps in
- Call a friend or listen to a podcast
- Grab a coffee, sparkling water, or snack right away
- Treat yourself to something you enjoy (books, magazines, even a massage)
💡 Key mindset shift:
Don’t sit at the bar and try to “be strong.” Change the environment.
🍷 How to Navigate Client Dinners Without Drinking
You don’t need a complicated explanation.
Keep it simple:
- “I’m not drinking right now.”
- “I’m doing a health challenge.”
- “I feel better without it.”
Then move on.
📌 Pro tip:
Arrive early and order a non-alcoholic drink first—so when the server comes, you can just say:
“I’ll have another one of these.”
No awkward spotlight moment.
🍹 What to Order Instead of Alcohol
If you’ve ever frozen at the bar wondering what to say, here are easy options:
- Sparkling water with lime
- Club soda + lime
- Diet Coke or soda
- Athletic Brewing Company, Heineken 0.0 or other NA beer
- Mocktails (just ask what’s available)
Confidence matters more than the drink.
🏨 How to Handle Hotel Nights Without Drinking
For many women, this is the hardest part of sober work travel.
Instead of defaulting to alcohol:
- Order room service and make it a treat
- Bring tea, hot chocolate, or snacks
- Watch your favorite show or read
- Take a bath or go to bed early
📌 Pro tip:
Call ahead and ask the hotel to remove alcohol from the minibar.
🧠 What to Do When You Feel Triggered
Pause and check in:
- Are you tired, hungry, or overwhelmed?
- Do you need a break—not a drink?
Then:
- Text someone or check in with your support group
- Remind yourself how you want to feel tomorrow morning
🚪 Give Yourself an Exit Strategy
You don’t have to stay out late to connect.
Try:
- “I’ve got an early morning.”
- “I’m heading up—long day tomorrow.”
- “I’ve got to call my kids before they go to bed” or “Gotta run and call my husband/partner.”
Most late-night conversations are repetitive, messy, and forgotten anyway.
The Shifts That Start to Change Things 🌱
🌺 Alcohol may feel like it helps you connect—but it often makes you less present
🌺 The awkwardness of not drinking is short-lived (and mostly in your head)
🌺 Planning ahead makes sober business travel dramatically easier
🌺 Many fears about not drinking at work events don’t actually come true
🌺 You may perform better, think more clearly, and feel more confident without alcohol
You Don’t Need Alcohol to Be Successful on Work Trips
If you’ve been putting off changing your relationship with alcohol because of an upcoming trip, conference, or client event, this is your reminder:
You don’t need to wait.
You don’t need perfect conditions.
And you don’t need alcohol to:
- Be confident
- Build relationships
- Or succeed in your career
What matters is having a plan, getting support, and being willing to try something different.
If business travel has felt like one of the hardest places to stop drinking, this episode will help you feel more prepared—and a lot less alone.
Tune in for honest stories, practical strategies, and proof that you can navigate business travel without alcohol—even when it feels like everything revolves around drinking.
