What If Being “Fine” Is Actually Keeping You Stuck?

If you’re the woman who holds everything together—the good mom, reliable friend, capable employee, partner who manages the schedules, emotions, details, and needs of everyone around you—this conversation might hit close to home.

Because you can look confident, competent, successful, and completely fine from the outside…

while underneath, you’re exhausted from trying to keep it that way.

Maybe you’ve spent years swallowing anger because you don’t want to overreact.

Giving people grace when you’re actually hurt.

Trying to be patient when you’re resentful.

Telling yourself you’re too sensitive, too emotional, too needy, or making too big a deal out of something.

And maybe wine became the easiest way to shut all of that down at the end of the day.

“Why am I so upset about this? I should be able to let it go.”

“Nothing is really wrong. Why can’t I just be fine?”

I’m talking with psychologist and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Marisa G. Franco, author of Platonic and Worth: The New Science of Self-Esteem and Secure Attachment, about why real self-worth isn’t about convincing yourself that you’re confident or learning to appear more secure.

It starts with treating your internal world like it matters.

Your anger.

Your hurt.

Your anxiety.

Your needs.

Your boundaries.

Even the parts of yourself you wish weren’t there.

And if you’ve spent years using wine to push uncomfortable feelings down, learning to actually listen to yourself can change much more than your relationship with alcohol.

The Core Question This Episode Answers

How do I stop ignoring my own feelings, needs, and boundaries—and build real self-worth without pretending I’m fine?

This Episode Is For You If…

✅  “Everyone thinks I have it together, but underneath I’m exhausted from managing everything.”

✅  “I’m always wondering if I’m overreacting, being too sensitive, or expecting too much.”

✅  “I give everyone else grace, but I rarely stop to ask what I actually feel or need.”

✅  “I get angry or resentful, push it down all day, and then want a glass of wine so I don’t have to feel it anymore.”

✅  “I know how to look confident and capable. I’m just not sure I actually feel secure underneath it all.”

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

❇️  The difference between self-esteem and self-worth and why looking confident or successful doesn’t necessarily mean you feel secure inside.

❇️  Why suppressing anger, hurt, resentment, insecurity, or neediness can actually make those emotions harder to regulate.

❇️  How people-pleasing can look like kindness or “giving grace” while quietly teaching you to abandon your own feelings and needs.

❇️  Why trying to act secure can backfire when you’re using communication tools, patience, or emotional regulation to avoid telling the truth about how you actually feel.

❇️  The “feel, heal, do” framework for acknowledging an emotion, giving yourself what you need in the moment, and deciding whether something in your environment needs to change.

❇️  How old experiences and implicit memories can shape your emotional reactions today, even when you don’t consciously remember where the feeling started.

❇️  Why you might reach for wine when you’re angry, hurt, overwhelmed, or resentful—and how learning to acknowledge those emotions can help you stop drinking at the people and situations you’re upset with.

When You Drink Instead of Saying What You Feel

One part of this conversation that really resonated with me was how often we try to get rid of an emotion before we’ve even allowed ourselves to acknowledge it.

You’re angry—but immediately tell yourself you shouldn’t be.

You’re hurt—but decide the other person deserves more grace.

You feel rejected—but convince yourself you’re being too sensitive.

You need something—but don’t want to be “needy.”

And when you spend all day pushing those emotions down, wine can become a really effective way to keep doing it.

I used to describe this as drinking at people.

You’re pissed.

You’re resentful.

You’re irritated.

But instead of acknowledging what’s happening or saying what you need, you open a bottle of wine.

The problem is that the emotion doesn’t disappear.

Sometimes it comes out later when you’re drinking. And then the next morning, instead of being angry about the situation that upset you in the first place, you’re angry at yourself for what you drank, said, texted, or did.

That cycle can keep you focused on blaming yourself instead of getting curious about what your emotions were trying to tell you.

The Shifts That Change Everything

🪻 From “I shouldn’t feel this way” → “This feeling is allowed to be here.”

You don’t have to prove that your emotion is rational before you’re allowed to feel it. Acknowledging anger, hurt, fear, jealousy, rejection, or resentment doesn’t mean you have to act on it. It means you stop fighting yourself long enough to understand what’s happening.

🪻 From appearing secure → being honest

Being secure doesn’t mean you’re calm, agreeable, patient, and unaffected all the time.

Sometimes the most secure thing you can say is:

This hurts.

I’m angry.

I’m anxious.

I need more.

This doesn’t work for me.

Security isn’t pretending you’re okay. It’s being honest about who you are and what you’re experiencing.

🪻 From taking care of everyone → not abandoning yourself

You can be compassionate toward someone else without erasing yourself in the process.

You can understand why someone behaved the way they did and still be hurt by it.

You can love someone and set a boundary.

You can give someone grace without requiring yourself to feel graceful before you’re ready.

🪻 From “What’s wrong with me?” → “What is this feeling trying to tell me?”

Strong reactions don’t automatically mean you’re dramatic, irrational, or too sensitive.

Sometimes what feels enormous in the present is connected to experiences your nervous system learned from long ago.

Instead of immediately judging yourself for the intensity of the emotion, you can get curious about it.

🪻 From numbing → feeling, healing, and choosing

You don’t have to immediately fix an emotion, drink over it, think positively, or talk yourself out of it.

You can notice it.

Name it.

Feel where it shows up in your body.

Give yourself reassurance and care.

And then decide what—if anything—you want to do next.

What I Want You to Remember

You don’t need to become more impressive, more accomplished, more agreeable, more emotionally controlled, or easier for everyone else to be around in order to feel worthy.

And you don’t need to drink away the parts of yourself that feel angry, hurt, anxious, vulnerable, rejected, needy, resentful, or overwhelmed.

Those parts of you don’t need to be shoved down.

They need your attention.

Because real self-worth isn’t about convincing yourself that you’re perfect.

It’s about treating your internal world like it matters.

And one of my biggest takeaways from this conversation with Marisa is this:

Being secure isn’t about always being okay. It’s about being honest.

If you’ve spent years looking like you have it all together while using wine to switch off the feelings you don’t think you’re supposed to have, this episode will give you a completely different way to think about self-worth, emotional security, boundaries, and what it means to actually take care of yourself.

“I’m probably overreacting.”

“I should just let this go.”

“Why can’t I just be fine?”

And when you spend all day pushing down anger, hurt, anxiety, resentment, or overwhelm, wine can become the easiest way to shut it all off.

Because changing your relationship with alcohol isn’t just about drinking less.

It’s also about learning to listen to yourself, trust what you feel, and stop using wine to make uncomfortable emotions disappear.
