10 Years Of Having A Sober Mom: A Conversation with My Kids

If you’ve ever wondered what your kids actually notice about your drinking—or what life could look like years after you stop—this conversation is for you.

I’m celebrating 10 years alcohol-free, and I invited my son Hank (17) and my daughter Lila (11) onto the podcast for a real conversation about our family then vs. now. We talk about what they remember, what they don’t, how teens actually think about drinking today, and what really changes inside a family when alcohol is no longer part of the picture.

The moment that changed everything

Ten years ago, when I couldn’t get more than four days without drinking, I kept thinking about one thing: my son.

He was eight years old. And I imagined him ten years into the future.

If I was passing out on the couch and not remembering the end of TV shows when he was eight… what would that look like a decade later? Would he not want to bring his friends over at night? What would he think of me? Would he want to be around me? Would he like me? Would he respect me?

I stopped drinking when Hank was almost eight and Lila was almost two. Not because everything fell apart—but because I could see where things were headed if nothing changed.

Fast-forward a decade.

On my 50th birthday, my son texted asking if he could have his friends over that night to play poker. He didn’t hesitate. He didn’t worry. He didn’t second-guess inviting people into our home.

And that was my full-circle moment.

Because ten years earlier, I was afraid he wouldn’t even want to ask.

Deciding to step out of the drinking cycle and walk away from alcohol?
Best decision of my life.

The question we’re really answering here

What actually changes for your kids—and your relationship with them—when you stop drinking?

You’ll feel seen listening to this if…

✅ You worry your kids notice more than you think

✅ You’ve tried to cut back but keep slipping back into old habits

✅ You want a calmer, more connected family life

✅ You wonder whether quitting drinking would really make a difference

✅ You want proof that stopping can become the best thing you ever did

What you’ll hear inside this conversation

❇️ What my son remembers about my drinking (and why his answer matters)

❇️ How teenagers today actually view alcohol and peer pressure

❇️ What stresses kids out now—and how they cope

❇️ How we talk to our kids about alcohol, safety, and choices

❇️ The bedtime routines and small moments that helped me through early sobriety

❇️ What kids really want most from their parents

❇️ Why family connection—not perfection—is what they remember

The Shifts That Change Everything

Your kids don’t need a perfect parent. They need a present one.

🌿 Alcohol affects the emotional weather in your home more than you realize.

Connection becomes your new reward system.

🌿 The longer you’re alcohol-free, the more you see what you gained—not what you gave up.

If you’ve ever thought maybe I should drink less… but I’m not sure I can, I want you to know this:

You don’t have to wait for things to get worse to make a change. And you don’t have to do it perfectly to make it matter.

Press play to hear what 10 years alcohol-free actually looks like—from the two people who experienced it right alongside me.
