It’s Never Too Late to Stop Drinking: Why Susan Quit Alcohol at 60
If you’re in your 50s, 60s, or 70s and wondering whether it’s really worth changing your relationship with alcohol now, I want you to hear Susan’s story.
Maybe your kids are grown. Maybe you’re an empty nester. Maybe you’ve been drinking for 30 or 40 years and wine is woven into your marriage, friendships, holidays, vacations, Friday nights, and the way you relax at the end of the day.
And maybe you keep thinking:
“My life is fine. Do I really need to stop drinking?”
“I’ve been doing this for decades. What’s the point in changing now?”
Susan, a member of The Sobriety Starter Kit® and now an SSK Ambassador, stopped drinking at 60.
She didn’t have a dramatic rock bottom. For years, she actually looked for evidence that she didn’t have a problem. She could do Dry January. She could give up alcohol for Lent. Her life looked good from the outside.
But underneath it all, Susan was anxious, waking up at 3 a.m., negotiating with herself about drinking, struggling with her weight, and holding tightly to wine because it had become her therapist, her comfort, her reward, and her constant companion.
She also couldn’t imagine who she would be or what her life would look like without it.
In this episode, Susan shares what finally helped her stop drinking after decades with alcohol, what those first difficult weeks really looked like, and why getting alcohol out of her life at 60 gave her something she didn’t expect: a sense of peace, freedom, and pride in herself.
This is a secondary heading.
Is it really worth quitting drinking in your 50s, 60s, or 70s after alcohol has been part of your life for decades?
This Episode Is For You If…
❇️ “My drinking isn’t ruining my life, so maybe I’m making too big a deal out of it.”
❇️ “I can stop for Dry January or Sober October, so I must be fine…right?”
❇️ “Wine has been part of my life for so long that I don’t know who I’d be without it.”
❇️ “I’m older, my kids are grown, and I wonder if quitting now would really make that much difference.”
❇️ “I’m tired of feeling anxious, waking up at 3 a.m., and promising myself I’ll do something differently, but I still don’t want to give up my wine.”
What You’ll Learn in This Episode
✅ Why being able to take short breaks from alcohol doesn’t necessarily answer the question of whether drinking is making your life better
✅ How Susan spent years trying to prove to herself that her drinking was “fine” because she hadn’t experienced a dramatic rock bottom
✅ Why wine became Susan’s therapist, comfort, reward, and part of the rituals she couldn’t imagine giving up
✅ What helped Susan finally get through the first difficult days instead of repeatedly stopping for four or five days and starting again
✅ Why lowering the bar, asking for help, eating the chocolate, and making not drinking her only priority changed everything
✅ How Susan experienced changes in her sleep, anxiety, energy, appearance, relationships, and overall sense of calm after stopping drinking
✅ Why changing her relationship with alcohol also meant changing her relationship with herself: setting boundaries, asking for help, doing less, and finally believing she deserved to be happy
The Shifts That Helped Susan Choose an Alcohol-Free Life
🌿 Stop asking whether your drinking is “bad enough.”
Susan spent years comparing herself to other people and looking for proof that she didn’t really have a problem.
But you don’t need a dramatic crisis before you’re allowed to decide that alcohol isn’t making your life better.
🌿 Give yourself enough time to get past the hardest part.
Susan had stopped for four or five days many times before. Then she’d drink again and start those same difficult first days all over.
This time, with support, she kept going.
By around 60 days alcohol-free, she wasn’t simply enduring life without wine. She was sleeping better, feeling less anxious, and experiencing a calm and peace she hadn’t felt in years.
🌿 Make not drinking the priority—not becoming a whole new person overnight.
You don’t need to stop drinking, lose weight, exercise every day, eat perfectly, drink gallons of water, and overhaul your entire life at the same time.
Susan’s experience was the opposite.
She lowered the bar. She asked for help. She rested. She ate chocolate and frozen custard. And she gave herself permission to focus on one important change.
🌿 Create a life you don’t need to escape from.
For Susan, stopping drinking eventually became about much more than what was in her glass.
She started asking for help instead of doing everything herself.
She stopped automatically saying yes.
She set better boundaries.
She stopped pushing herself to exhaustion.
And slowly, she created a life that felt calmer, easier, and more like her own
What Susan’s Story Shows Us About Life Without Alcohol
One of the things I love most about Susan’s story is that she didn’t stop drinking because her entire life had fallen apart.
She stopped because she finally became willing to find out whether her life could feel better without alcohol in it.
And it did.
That doesn’t mean every day was easy.
There were first Friday nights without wine. First dinners out. First holidays. First parties. First moments when a beautiful glass of wine was sitting right in front of her and every part of her wanted to drink it.
But every time Susan moved through one of those “firsts,” she learned something important:
She could do this.
And the further she got from drinking, the less power alcohol had over her.
If you’re wondering whether it’s too late for you, whether you’ve been drinking too long, or whether changing now would even be worth it, I hope Susan’s story gives you another possibility to consider.
You don’t have to decide what the rest of your life will look like today.
You can start by giving yourself enough time away from alcohol to discover how you actually feel without it.
Because whether you’re 40, 50, 60, 70, or beyond, you are still allowed to change.
You’re allowed to outgrow alcohol.
You’re allowed to want more peace.
And you’re allowed to build a life that feels so good you don’t need a drink to escape from it.
